Temple Institute: The Righteous: An Everlasting Foundation

"When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation."
Proverbs 10:25

Shvat 3, 5766/January 31, 2006

The passing of Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri: what is a tsaddik and what is his role in the nation of Israel? In this week's TEMPLE TALK Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven discuss the remarkable love that the people of Israel have for Rabbi Kaduri and the outpouring of grief as hundreds of thousands participated in his funeral procession. Acting Prime Minister Olmert would pay his spin doctors top dollar to learn the secret of this kind of appeal, but alas, will remain clueless as to what truly moves the Jewish people, as he and his advisors, like Pharaoh and his magicians, refuse to recognize the One G-d, and only harden their hearts against their fellow Jews, even when their own well laid plans blow up in their faces.

Rosh Chodesh Shvat - the new month of Shvat whose attributes include the letter tsaddik - righteous one - and the element of water - the symbol of Torah. The current Torah readings of Va'era and Bo, (Exodus 6:2 - 13:16), describing the ten plagues and the slow, painful recognition by Pharaoh of the G-d of Israel. Why did G-d "harden Pharaoh's heart," and why was it too late for Pharaoh to do teshuva - to repent? Gain insight into all these questions, and more, on this week's TEMPLE TALK.

Chodesh tov - a good month to all,
Yitzchak Reuven
